The aging population and the rise in obesity accounts for much of the increase across the state, said Dr. Frank J. Dubeck, Jr., Excellus' vice president and chief medical officer for medical policy. 


Improved screenings and stricter criteria for diagnosis are also factors contributing to the rise, he said.

The Denim and Diamonds Gala has become somewhat of an annual event in the Star City. 

While Saturday night was all about fun, pricking a finger several times a day and being attached to an insulin pump is not fun for children with diabetes. 


Everyone attending Saturday's event at the Shenandoah Club hopes one day that will be a thing of the past.
